Bodies

Whenever I tell people I am a massage therapist they always tell me that they could really use a massage. Perfect! I give them my card and then they tell me, “But I don’t want you to look at my body.” O_o What?! Um, ok? Do you want me to have my eyes closed the whole time? What do you think is going to happen? You do realize you’re going to be covered, right?

No one is happy with their bodies. Especially when we open up magazines and see these amazing photoshopped bodies. People always think that I’m judging them on what they look like. I don’t know if people think that I’m counting fat rolls, attempting not to vomit on them when I’m massaging, or if people think I’m going to talk about what they look like after the massage. To be honest, it’s just a body. Big, small, tall, short, hairy, bald, none of that matters to me. I don’t care what you look like. It’s like with waxing, I’m worried about: which way is the hair growing and how do I get it off? Same with massage, what is the problem and how can I help fix it?

If I spent my entire time worried about what people look like when I’m massaging them, I wouldn’t be able to work. I’m too busy thinking about what you told me you wanted focus on and how I’m going to approach it. On top of all of that, the only part of you that is ever uncovered is what I’m working on. If it makes you feel better, the lights are dimmer in the massage room as well.

This should be the place where you can relax and feel comfortable. If you’re tensed up and worried about what I may think about you, it won’t help you during the massage. So take a few deep breaths, go to your happy place, and let’s get to work!
